The People Who Shape Your Child's Character, Confidence, and Future
ENTREPRENEUR PARENTS PODCAST BECOMING UNSHAKABLE Hosted by Dan Caldwell and Ildiko Ferenczi
Who is helping shape the person your child will become?
Some of the most influential people in our children's lives may never appear on our family tree. A trusted neighbor who becomes a grandparent, a godparent who leads by example, a mentor who recognizes a child's potential, or an older sibling whose love leaves a lasting impression. Sometimes the people who help raise us aren't connected to us by blood. They're connected to us through the love, character, and wisdom they bring into our lives.
In this deeply personal episode of Becoming Unshakable, Ildiko reflects on the people her mother intentionally welcomed into her childhood. Following her parents' divorce and her father's absence from daily family life, her older brother David became an important father figure. Her mother also nurtured relationships with devoted fathers, accomplished professionals, community leaders, and neighbors who became family in every way that mattered. Now, as Ildiko raises Daniel and Destiny, she is thinking intentionally about the people who will help shape her own children's lives.
π± THE PEOPLE WHO HELP SHAPE WHO WE BECOME
One of the most meaningful gifts Ildiko's mother gave her was the opportunity to learn from people whose lives reflected the values she wanted her children to understand. Through their example, Ildiko saw that success wasn't limited to professional accomplishments. It could mean building a loving home, keeping your word, serving others, remaining faithful to your responsibilities, and using your gifts to contribute something valuable to the world. These were lessons she could observe long before she was old enough to fully understand them.
π YOUR CHILDREN ARE LEARNING FROM MORE THAN YOUR WORDS
Children learn by watching how the adults around them live. They notice how people treat their spouses, care for their children, keep their promises, and respond to those who have nothing to offer them in return. They remember generosity, recognize integrity, and learn from everyday examples of responsibility and leadership. This is why the people we welcome into our family's lives matter. Not because professional success makes someone a worthy influence, but because genuine character can demonstrate values our children carry into their own relationships and futures.
π€ THE GIFT OF MENTORSHIP AND CHOSEN FAMILY
Some of the most beautiful relationships in a child's life develop beyond traditional family titles. A trusted family friend may become an auntie, a caring neighbor may become a grandparent, and a mentor may recognize a gift in a child before that child fully recognizes it in themselves. These relationships can create opportunities for encouragement, belonging, and wisdom. As parents, we can nurture these connections thoughtfully, remembering that trust must be earned, healthy boundaries matter, and the people closest to our children should consistently respect their well-being and our responsibility as parents. The goal isn't to surround our children with impressive names. It's to build a circle of trustworthy people whose presence adds something good to their lives.
π THE ARMY OF WISDOM BEHIND YOU
Ildiko also reflects on another gift her mother gave her: a love of reading. Through books, she discovered that she could learn from people she might never meet. Authors, thinkers, leaders, and entrepreneurs could share their experiences through the pages of a book, offering guidance and perspective long after their own lives had ended. She came to see this wisdom as an army behind her, a collection of lessons she could draw upon when facing challenges or imagining new possibilities. Now, she wants Daniel and Destiny to understand that learning doesn't end with the people they know personally. There is a world of wisdom available to them, and they can learn to seek it thoughtfully and carry forward what is good.
π BIBLE MOMENT: WALK WITH THE WISE
Proverbs 13:20 (KJV)
"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."
Scripture reminds us that the people we spend time with can influence how we think, what we value, and the choices we make. This isn't about judging people by their wealth, titles, or achievements. It's about recognizing wisdom in their character, humility, honesty, willingness to serve, and the way they care for those entrusted to them. As we look for these qualities in others, we should also ask God to help us demonstrate them in our own homes. One day, our children may become the very people whose example helps shape another generation.
