🎙️EP 172 Great Ideas Start with Great Questions! Socrates: The Bravest Question-Asker! 🏛️
(Great Thinkers Series - Philosophers & Thought Leaders)
ENTREPRENEUR KIDS LEGACY SHOW
Hosted by Daniel and Destiny
In this inspiring and educational episode of the Entrepreneur Kids Legacy Show, siblings Daniel David and Destiny hop into their time machine to explore the life and legacy of Socrates, one of the most influential thinkers in history.
More than 2,400 years ago, Socrates walked the streets of Athens asking big questions like "What is courage?" "What is justice?" and "How do we live a good life?" His curiosity became his greatest gift, and today, that gift still shapes how we think, teach, and lead.
Listeners will learn all about the Socratic Method, the timeless approach to teaching through questions instead of lectures. It's a method still used in modern schools, debates, business meetings, and even in negotiations — proving that asking good questions can unlock powerful answers.
Daniel and Destiny show how this ancient wisdom applies to today's young leaders: from building family businesses to being kind friends, great thinkers know how to listen, ask, and lead with humility and truth.
The episode gently highlights Socrates' influence on Plato and Aristotle, and how his ideas encouraged generations to think deeply about right, wrong, and purpose — lessons that beautifully align with biblical wisdom about seeking truth and using your voice for good.

[00:00:02] You can do anything! We all have a God-given destiny. Never let negative thoughts or people tell you you can't be great, because you were fearfully and wonderfully made. There's greatness inside all of us, but greatness doesn't happen. It takes boldness, courage, and leadership. Welcome to the Entrepreneur Kids Legacy Show, where we think big, big broadly, and make amazing things happen.
[00:00:32] I'm Destiny. I'm Daniel. We challenge you to step into your future, take action, and create a legacy that lasts. Let's go! Hello, darling friends. I welcome you today with open arms. Let's take a big breath in. Let it out. Let's take a big breath in. You made it here, and we're so glad you did.
[00:01:19] The space is for you! The place to learn, to grow, and to dream. And I'm your storytelling and business buddy, Daniel. I'm so glad to be back with you all. Remember, every time you show up here, you're building legacy. One question, one choice, one step at a time. Have you ever asked a question and got another question right back instead of asking?
[00:02:19] An answer? That could be kind of funny? Great leaders don't. Great leaders don't pretend to know it all. They ask questions that help everyone think deeper. And the man we're about to meet built a whole way of learning about asking why. That's why he's remembered thousands of years later.
[00:02:38] Daniel, will you tell us? Daniel, will you tell us the story? Are you ready for it, Destiny? Are our amazing friends ready for it? We're all ready for it. Okay, darling Destiny. Let's rewind the time machine. Take it away.
[00:02:56] We got someone's eardrum there. Take it away, Destiny. Okay, but this time I want our friends to join us. Come on friends, let's go.
[00:03:47] Wow, that's amazing. I'm so excited. Just upon a time in 470 BC. That means before Christ, if you didn't already know that. Now you do.
[00:04:05] Okay, back to the story. Back in 470 BC, in Athens, Greece, a little boy named Socrates was born.
[00:04:17] His father was a stonemason and sculptor. His mother was a midwife, helping women bring babies into the world. Growing up, Socrates loved learning, asking questions, and thinking about how the world worked. As a boy, he probably helped his father with stonework and watched his mother take care of families.
[00:04:45] But his true passion was talking with people and asking even more questions about it. That's right, Destiny. Did you hear that, friend? Asking questions is a great thing. I also wanted to add, Socrates wasn't only a thinker. He was also a soldier.
[00:05:10] He fought bravely in the Peloponnesian War at battles like Potidaea and Delium. He was known for his courage, his endurance, and staying calm even in dangerous moments when others would have lost it. And here's something amazing. A famous oracle at Delphi once declared, no one is wiser than Socrates.
[00:05:36] At first, he didn't believe it. He went around asking leaders and teachers questions to see if it was true. But guess what? They couldn't explain when Socrates realized. His wisdom came from knowing he didn't know everything.
[00:05:57] In addition to that thought, Socrates became famous in Athens for walking through the busy streets asking people deep questions like, What is justice? Or what makes a person truly wise? Instead of telling people what to think, he helped them discover answers themselves.
[00:06:21] This way of learning became known as the Socratic method. Asking questions to discover truth. And people still use it today. Teachers use it in classrooms. Lawyers and judges use it in courts. Doctors use it when solving tricky medical cases. And many people use it in debates.
[00:06:49] So next time your teacher keeps asking you question after question, guess what? You're being like Socrates. Socrates never wrote anything down. Everything we know about him comes from his students. Especially Plato, who he also talked about. And here's the cool part. Plato taught Aristotle, who he also talked about.
[00:07:15] And Aristotle taught Alexander the Great. One curious teacher set off a chain of wisdom that shaped the world. That's right, but not everyone liked his questions. And not everyone agreed with his questions. Some leaders thought he was storing up trouble. But Socrates never gave up. Until the very end of his life, he stood by what he believed. He stayed true to his missing.
[00:07:44] Of teaching people to think deeply and live wisely. One curious teacher set off a chain of wisdom that shaped the world. That's absolutely correct. And his way of asking questions, the Socratic method, like Destiny was talking about earlier, is still used today. That's how powerful his legacy was. And still is.
[00:08:13] That was a great story, Daniel. It sure was. Now, friends, what did we learn? That's right, friends. What can we learn from Socrates? Real leaders don't just bulk out orders. They ask questions. They help others discover answers for themselves. And for us kids, it means this. Never stop asking why.
[00:08:41] Every question helps you grow smarter and stronger. Yes! Socrates showed us that leaders don't just give answers. They ask questions that lead to truth. And as people of faith, we know the greatest truth comes from God's word. When we ask him why, he gives us wisdom to live by.
[00:09:06] Hey, Destiny, I think I figured out what Socrates would be like as a parent. You would say, may I please have dessert? And Socrates would say, well, what is dessert and why do you want it? Okay, friends, do you know what time it is?
[00:09:29] It's time for the Legacy Lightning Question. What did Socrates do? His big ideas.
[00:09:58] A. He wrote them, carved them in, shared them in conversations that got passed down. Painted them on carpets. The show notes and see if you got the answer right.
[00:10:26] Hint, he never wrote what his students did. And while you're there, leave your favorite part of the show and your parents' Instagram handle. That way we can find our next Legacy Leader of the Month. Accepted. This week's challenge, ask a question about something in your day.
[00:10:56] Could be a homework, a chore, or even the sky. Write down what you discover with your family. Because the best leaders are the best learners. And I trust you'll learn something new. Even about something familiar. Oh, no. We're getting close to the end. And it's the perfect.
[00:11:30] You're growing in the kind of person who changed the world for better. Share this episode with your friends. Keep building a generation of curious kids. Great question. We go to dinner in this family community.
