Ethos! What Does Your Family Stand For?

One rainy afternoon Leo and Lily were spending the day at Grandma's house Outside the rain quietly danced against the windows

[00:00:55] Inside the house smelled like warm cinnamon, fresh sourdough bread, and sweet chamomile tea It felt like one of those days that made you want to slow down As Grandma carefully dusted an old wooden bookshelf, something caught her eye Oh, she smiled I almost forgot

[00:01:24] She reached for a beautiful little book of elegant gold writing The cover simply read A family story Just then, a beautiful white butterfly rested quietly on the windowsill Lily the Lion smiled They always seemed to know where the beautiful stories are

[00:01:51] The book looked very old Its corners were gently worn Little ribbons peeked out from between the pages It looked like it had been opened, read, and loved many, many, many times Grandma lion said Come here, my darlings I have something I'd love to show you Leo and Lily hurried over And snuggled beside Grandma on the couch

[00:02:21] She slowly opened the book Inside were beautiful old family photographs Delicious handwritten recipes from generations before Pressed flowers Adorable children's drawings Special birthday cards And tiny handwritten notes and poems from many years ago Every page held another memory

[00:02:50] Another smile Another story As they carefully turned another page Leo noticed something near the back of the book There were dozens of blank pages He looked up at Grandma with curious eyes Grandma, did you forget to finish your book? Grandma laughed softly Oh no, darling I didn't leave those pages blank because I forgot

[00:03:19] She lovingly rested her hands on the empty pages I left them blank because I knew one day You'd help write the next chapter Oh, all chapter? Our family's chapter, darlings You see, every generation has the opportunity To help write the story of the family

[00:03:44] Our story isn't just about where we've been or what we've done It's about who we're becoming The room grew wonderfully quiet The vein continued, tapping against the windows Even the fireplace seemed to pause for a moment Leo the lion looked back at the blank pages Grandma, what kind of story are we going to write?

[00:04:13] Grandma smiled My darling! That may be one of the most important questions a family can ever ask She gently closed the book There's actually a special word for it It's a word people have been using for thousands of years Leo and Lily the lion leaned in What's the word, Grandma? What's the word? It's ethos, starlings Ethos?

[00:04:42] That's a funny word What does it ever mean? It's a beautiful old Greek word It means the character your family becomes known for The promises you keep And the kind of people you'll be coming together Wow, Grandma, that's remarkable It's not just something we say Grandma Lion smiled That's right, darlings It's not just a word

[00:05:12] It's how we live Think of it this way When people spend time with our family Do they feel welcomed? Do they see kindness? Do they hear encouraging words? Do they know we tell the truth? Do they see us helping others? Do they see us building together? Do they see us praying together? Oh, yes Little by little

You know, friends At the beginning of the new year Lots of families made goals They make plans Dream big dreams Fall into their God-given destiny And talk about the year ahead And now, here we are Halfway through the year

[00:07:05] That makes today a wonderful day To pause, look back And ask ourselves Are we becoming the family We hoped we'd become? And if your family has never talked about Their ethos before Don't worry Every family starts somewhere In fact, today might be The perfect day to begin Because every beautiful family story Starts with one little choice

[00:07:35] And every new chapter Begins with one blank page You know what I love most About Grandma Lion's story? She didn't tell little Leo and Lily What kind of family they had to become She invited them to think about it Because every family is unique Every family can choose What they want to become known for Some families become known For making everyone feel welcome

[00:08:04] Some become known for serving others Some become known for laughing together Some become known for always telling the truth Some become known for working hard Some become known for working hard Building something great together And some become known for praying together Every family's story is a little different And that's beautiful The important question isn't Isn't Is our family perfect?

[00:08:33] The important question is What direction are we going? Because every loving choice Fights a little beautiful page In your family's story Ooh, that reminds me The Bible says In Joshua chapter 24 verse 15 As for me and my house We will serve the Lord

[00:09:00] Joshua isn't talking about Having a perfect family He was making a decision He was choosing What his family would stand for That was their ethos Promise Their choices too One prayer One activation One day at a time

[00:09:29] Friends Imagine someone Came to visit with you On summer vacation When they leave How do you hope they feel? Loved Welcomed Encouraged Maybe they came Or maybe someone Watches your family Working together Maybe they see everyone Helping clean up After a beach day Maybe they hear someone

[00:09:58] Say I'll help you Or I'm sorry That's hard for some people To say, you know But they say it anyway Cause it's the right thing to do And it feels good For both people Or maybe they hear you say Let's pray together Or maybe they see you Praying together At a restaurant Those little moments May not seem very big But they're writing Your family's story One kind choice

[00:10:28] Maybe won't become Your family's ethos But thousands of kind choices Over many years Just might Did you know Scientists have discovered That families Who regularly Practice kindness Gratitude and encouragement Often build stronger relationships And greater trust over time Just like watering a garden

Now draw a line From the top To the bottom In the middle Of the page Now write down Everything that comes To mind On the left side Maybe your family Chooses words Like faith Love Kindness Honesty Joy Wisdom Hard work Forgiveness Generosity Courage

[00:12:57] Encouragement Or something Completely different Because this is Your family's ethos Then turn those words Into promises You can actually Live On the right side Maybe you're right In our family We put God first We tell the truth Even when it's hard We're honest We keep our word We forgive We work hard

[00:13:26] Building a meaningful Legacy We give generously We speak words That encourage We stand up For what's right We have integrity We are threats And when we make mistakes We don't hide The ethos

[00:13:55] Doesn't have to sound Like anyone else's Maybe your family Loves adventure Maybe you love Serving people Maybe you're builders Creators Creators Entrepreneurs Missionaries Encouragers Speakers Of Inspirators Of men Just write a few promises That are very family

[00:14:24] You can create a child Family Decorers

[00:14:54] Waypoint of the year This is also a wonderful time To ask How are we doing Are we living What we say matters most And if the answer Is not always That's okay An ethos Isn't a declaration That your family Is perfect It's a direction You're choosing To grow And you know What we legacy Leaders do When we realize We've drifted A little off course

[00:15:22] We ride the ship We don't throw away The whole journey Because we had One difficult day We notice We learn We course correct And begin again Because strong families Aren't families That don't ever Make mistakes Strong family To keep growing Together Family receives Blank pages And the choices

[00:15:51] We make together Helps decide What gets written On them And friends Here's something Really important You don't have to Wait until you're Grown up To help build Your family's ethos You're already Building it today When you tell The truth Especially when Telling the truth Is hard When you apologize You help build it When you notice Something needs To be done You help Without being asked That's helping Be

[00:16:23] Courage Pray Give generously Say hugs Then kisses Or simply notice That someone Needs a Barkable Friends Have to have The same gifts As everyone else In your family You are special And unique Just like everyone Else in your family Maybe one person

[00:16:53] Is a wonderful Encourager Someone else Is courageous Enough to speak up Someone loves Serving people Someone is a builder A thinker A giver A teacher A speaker Who inspires others That's me Or maybe someone Who always seems To notice The person who needs

[00:17:21] A little extra love Different gifts Can help build The same beautiful Family ethos Ethos doesn't mean Everyone in your family Becomes exactly the same It means underneath All those different Personalities and gifts You know what matters most What do we stand for? How do we want to live? Who are we becoming together? Now friends Let's go back to Grandma Lion's house

[00:17:51] One more time Do you remember All those blank pages In their family book Called Our Family Story? Imagine Leo and Lily the Lion Returning many Many years later They're taller now And the book is older Its leather is softer And its corners Are even more worn Leo the Lion Carefully opens Our family story And something is different

[00:18:21] Some of those blank pages Aren't blank anymore There are new Beautiful photographs New adventures And travel adventures Prayers God answered Miracles Lessons the family learned God-given destinies Coming true And maybe even A few mistakes I mean lessons Some stories of forgiveness And beautiful stories

[00:18:49] Of building a legacy together Lily the Lion Turns in that old page And slowly turns another And another Until finally She reaches the very back She looks down And smiles There are still lots Of blank pages Grandma Finished it Grandma smiles Oh darling

[00:19:18] We're never supposed To finish it Those pages Are for the generations Still to come And suddenly Leo and Lily Lion Understood something They could not Have understood All those years ago Their family story Didn't begin with them If they cared for it Faithfully It wouldn't end With them either They could carry Those things forward And someday
